Jeju Island Jeju-shi - Gwakji Beach 🏝

One of my favorite beaches to visit so far is easily Gwakji Beach. The sand is almost white and touches your feet with a powder-like softness. In addition to the soft sand, plenty of smaller wave pools break the waves as they come in, so the water is also a deep calm blue that doesn’t crash against you. It is a family-friendly area with plenty of kids playing and splashing around the small wave pools. They laugh and squeal with each new sea creature they come across. Mothers wade in the water and gently push smaller children around in giant inflatable tubes.

Early mornings are the best time to head to the beach as most locals and families seem to arrive between 12 and 2 pm. Also depending on the time of year, there are parasols and tables along the coast as well as a tent to rent inflatable tubes from. I would recommend this beach as the first beach to visit because it is along the coast on the way to the island's west side.

The cafes and small restaurants nearby are also relatively calm and not busy until much later in the morning. There is a parking lot for the rental car and a bathroom near the parking lot.

My absolute favorite feature of this beach was the fresh water, open-air spring bath located right on the beach.

🏝 Open Air Spring Bath 🏝

Obviously, no photography was allowed in the spring water bath, but the entrance is small and most people walk right past it as the sounds of the spring water can be easily confused for the ocean waves. The spring is lined with volcanic rock walls as three cold water spouts rush out onto the rock flooring, dripping and flowing into a small pool in the middle of the open-air bath. It is a wonderfully refreshing end to a long beach morning to rinse under the cascading cool spring water.

This beach is undeniably one of my favorites to visit every time I go to Jeju.
